Dear 8th Grade Harrisburg Middle School Families, It is that time of year again! We are excited to announce that 8th grade promotion will be held on the high school football field at 6:30 pm on Monday, June 14th. Promoting students will be seated on either side of the stage in alphabetical order and will be called across the stage in the same order. This will be a “bring your own chair” event. Promoting students will be allowed to have eight family members attend this event. There will be large pods drawn on the football field in which families will need to be in. Middle School Football Sign Ups We would like to determine how many middle school students would be interested in playing tackle football. At this time we are still determining whether a football season could happen. If it can, it would begin in March. If you are a 6th, 7th, or 8th grader who might be interested, please sign the sheet at the office ASAP.

Dear Harrisburg Community, More of our students have returned to in-person learning, which means they are walking, riding in cars or riding bikes to school in the morning and afternoon. As parents drop their children off in front of the elementary and middle schools, please be aware of the increase traffic and pedestrians. Our crosswalks are very busy before and after school, so please be patient and drive slow. Plan for a little more congestion around the schools between 8 am – 8:45 a.m. and 2:25 p.m. – 3 p.m. We appreciate your support as we safely bring our students back to a full day of in person learning.

Dear Harrisburg School District Families, We are happy to announce that we have purchased Go Guardian, an internet security software that will protect and safeguard your children while they are using district issued equipment. Go Guardian protects students by limiting the websites they can access and allows their teachers to see what websites they have been accessing while using district issued chromebooks and while on the school district’s network. There are also many internet security threats that exist and Go Guardian is how we protect our students from those threats, as well. However, due to the nature of the protection that Go Guardian provides us, and that we have it installed on every district issued chromebook we are unable to allow students to bring their own personal chromebook, laptop, or iPad to school. Additionally, we would like all Harrisburg School District (HSD) students to use HSD devices while on campus as a way to maintain equity of education while here. Each school has apps and websites that teachers and students can use at any point during the day. All district devices have been set-up to ensure that all students have equal access to the apps that pertain to them. This way we can ensure that all students have the exact same access to the educational processes that teachers are providing. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our technology coordinator, Paul Lambert at paul.lambert@harrisburg.k12.or.us. Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Dear Harrisburg Middle School Families, This message is for the parents of students who do not take the bus to school. This message is only intended for those who walk, ride or have their parents drop them off. In order to comply with ODE requirements for social distancing we ask that 5th and 6th grade students enter campus through a side gate located on the side of the school. The 7th and 8th grade students need to enter campus through the front doors of the middle school. There will be middle school staff at each door with signs to help students with this new process. All students will exit campus through the same doors they entered. Your student’s teachers will be talking this over with them, as well. If you have any questions please reach out to the front office. Thank you for your continued patience and grace as we work out all minor details with returning students to campus.

7th & 8th Grade Dear Parents, Beginning the week of Oct. 12, students will be using packets for English class. This should make things a lot easier for students, who can work directly on the printed pages to annotate stories, complete graphic organizers, and engage more directly in activities. It should also facilitate their learning, as they can use their devices more often to simply view the class and the teacher's shared screen, and they can avoid having to switch screen views constantly to see the text/story material, a particular worksheet, and/or Google Classroom, for example. Packets for next week will be available for pick-up this afternoon (Thursday, Oct. 8) between 2:30 and 4:30, and also on Monday. Generally, packet pickup moving forward will be scheduled for Mondays. We will advise students and parents when the next packets are ready to be picked up. Thank you!

First four weeks It is hard to believe we are completing four weeks of school in the 2020-21 school year. Our elementary school has grades k-3 meeting on campus for in person learning. Principal Geddes and team have done an amazing job following all of the ODE guidelines for health and safety purposes. Students and staff all wear facial coverings and follow social distancing as much as possible. Recesses are set up uniquely in order to comply with limiting the cohort mingling. Our food service department provides meals in the hallway, so students can eat in their classrooms and sanitation stations are located at every entrance. Our custodians are busy wiping surfaces, door handles and empting garbage cans. They have a restroom system in place that only allows 2 people at a time in the restroom, room capacity signs posted outside every room. As a reminder to our parents and guardians, as you come onto campus to pick up your son/daughter or drop off, please practice social distancing and wear a facial covering. Our success is the Harrisburg community’s success and in order for us to stay open for in person learning, we must continue practicing the safe practices recommended by the CDC. The good news is we remain student and staff free of any positive COVID-19 cases. In the Harrisburg School District, we have a wonderful staff of caring and professional individuals. It will take all of us working together in order to provide a healthy and safe place for our children to learn and grow. If you have questions or concerns please call me at 541-995-6626.
