Dear Harrisburg Parents and Guardians, First of all I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to be serving the district, you, and our students in this new role. This will be a very challenging year for you, your students, and staff. However, despite these challenges I believe that we can still have a great year and meet the needs of all students and keep them on a path to success. It will take everyone working together as a team to accomplish this but I believe we can make it happen! Additionally, I want to thank you for your patience with us as you have waited for key information about the upcoming school year. Like you we have been patiently waiting for guidance from the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority. Please understand that we have worked tirelessly to develop a plan for your children to bring them the best education possible. Our Governor, along with representatives from the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority have developed metrics that will aid us in determining when we can safely bring your children back to school. Currently, our Linn County metrics only allow us to provide a Comprehensive Distance Learning model to all students grades 5-8. This is a state level decision. As of right now it is the district’s intent to provide Comprehensive Distance Learning and maintain this model for the first nine weeks of the school year. During this time we will be continuing to monitor the state mandates and the county metrics and reassess our current model. If state mandates and county metrics, at the time, support in-person learning for the middle school then we will begin the transition process and implement a gradual return to a normal school model. If the mandates and metrics do not support in-person learning then we will continue with our Comprehensive Distance Learning model. I want to be clear about our distance learning model. The new distance learning model has very clear mandates from the Oregon Department of Education. Things will not be the same as they were during the spring. Our distance learning model will be robust, rigorous, and challenging. Daily attendance will be required. Grades matter and will be assigned with each assignment. Instructor feedback will be given. My goal is to have distance learning simulate a normal school day, as much as possible. Students will go through their daily schedule. Their school day will start at 8:05 and continue until 2:30. Classes will be 45 minutes in length and students will have 5 minutes in between classes. There will be a forty minute lunch break at 11:20. Students will be required to be in every class, every day; much like they would be during a normal school year. If we have a positive case of COVID-19 in our school or district, the Oregon Health Authority will guide us through the appropriate course of action. If a positive case does occur please understand that it is not the school district’s authority to determine closure. That determination will reside with the Oregon Health Authority. We will be creating two transition plans. One will be to go from Comprehensive Distance Learning to a normal school model. The other will be to go from Comprehensive Distance Learning to a hybrid learning model. My goal is to be well prepared for both situations. I know many of you still have questions and concerns. I am hopeful that this letter will help to answer some of those questions and ease some of your concerns. Along with being your principal I am also a parent of an elementary school student and I share all of your concerns and anxiety. I know my son’s school is working hard to provide him with the safest learning environment possible. That is the same that I am tirelessly working on. Your students, as the have my previous ten years mean the world to me and I promise you that we will provide an enriching learning experience for your students. My staff will be appropriately trained on putting together a distance learning plan and will work very hard to make sure that your students are getting a quality education. I could not be more proud of them and excited to work with these amazing educators. We’re in this together, and together we will make this work! Very sincerely, Pat Jarman

How will ODE’s Graduation guidance impact college admissions? A: The Oregon public universities are committed to ensuring that new students who intend to enroll at our institutions are considered fairly in light of the educational interruption they have endured. No student admitted to our institutions for fall 2020 will have their admission rescinded due to changes in grading policy or the inability to complete their coursework, so long as they still graduate. Students who apply to our institutions are still subject to a review process that focuses on one's ability to succeed in college, but now recognizes that some situations are beyond their control. Grading during Distance Learning Recently, Oregon Department of Education (ODE) provided guidance around grading during the Distance Learning for All,(DL4A) for grades 9-11. Harrisburg School District made the decision to move to a Pass/No Pass/Incomplete system for grades 3-11. This holds students current GPA’s harmless during this closure. The teachers will determine grades of Pass/No pass/ Incomplete based on the staff interaction with students and work completed. Teachers are tracking their students who participate during the connection times and work completed.

April 2, 2020 Please review the following update regarding the expectations and details of distance learning for Harrisburg Jr/Sr High School students: Our staff has spent this week (March 30-April 2) working hard to adapt to the world of distant learning. They have been very involved with developing creative ways to educate our students remotely. All of this starts with making sure all of our families have the necessary equipment and materials to access education. Starting next week (April 6-9) you should be able to access material for your students to work on. During this week please make sure that contact is made with each of your student’s teachers. The expectation is that your student needs to make contact with each of their teachers at least once per week. This can occur in a variety of ways which includes email, Zoom, or by phone. Our goal for this week is that everyone (staff, students, and parents) becomes familiar with the process of distance learning. I am asking my teachers not to enter grades this week as we realize there will be some challenges that need to be overcome and I don’t want additional stress placed on students that are adjusting to this style of learning. On April 13th we will officially start providing Distance Learning where teachers will be establishing due dates, requiring assignments and assessments, providing feedback, and entering grades. The expectation is that students will spend approximately 30 minutes per day for each of their classes. Students will also need to continue to make weekly check-ins with their teachers. This will provide the opportunity for all students to earn their credits for the second semester. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work together to provide the best possible education for our students during these challenging circumstances.

The governor's executive order gave five stipulations for school districts to do in order to receive state school funding. One of those is to continue paying employees through the closure. We are looking into having staff perform painting and possibly other maintenance items around the district while following social distancing guidelines. We are planning to have classified staff work with teachers and be available for phone calls, paper packet copying and collating each week.

Here is a link to ODE parent resource. Yesterday I mentioned online distance learning. I was incorrect in using online in my sentence. Distance learning is not digital learning. More to come.. Our HS Girls basketball played a tough game against the number 1 seed but fell 60-47 in the end. They overcame a 21-2 deficit in the first quarter and got within 3 points at the half. Good effort Eagles! Tomorrow they will play the winner of the 4 and 5 seed game at 9am at Marshfield HS. Go Eagles!
